With cod fishing closed in the rivers many anglers head to the lakes to get the cod fix and there is no better home to giant murray cod than Glenlyon. While the weather has been good the fish have been very active, both cod and yellowbelly. Fishing large spinnerbaits and swimbaits has worked for the big cod while, the yellowbelly have been keen on the small blades jigged in the timber along with trolled lures and salt water yabbies. Be prepared some of the yellowbelly have been huge up around the 3kg mark.
Much the same scenario at Coolmunda, fish are really biting well with numerous reports this week of big cod caught in the timbers on large spinnerbaits along with good numbers of yellowbelly out in the middle of the lake on both ZX blades and saltwater yabbies. The lake is alive with shrimp so take your traps out. Plenty of excitement around Coolmunda, Defiantly a place to head in the near future.
Its rare that all the fisheries are firing but right now is an exception because the bass lakes are fishing really well also. Somerset especially is firing with large schools of bass schooling up on the flats. Areas like Beams Creek and Pelican Point are holding good numbers of fish while slow rolling soft plastics and spoons has worked really well. I think if you come across one of the schools most sinking lures or deep divers will work well.
We are having a good year at Cooby. while most anglers are having good success at Cooby on a variety of different techniques jigging blades and trolling hardbodies close to the weed edge has been the most productive. While sinking saltwater yabbies and live shrimp is also a great way to land the nice size yellowbelly around Cooby.
Leslie isn’t breaking the trend, fish are really firing they are super easy to find once you get into the old creek bed you should be on fish. A lot of anglers are fishing close together at the moment because the yellowbelly are schooled up thick in the middle of the lake. “They wont be hard to find’’ again jigging blades and soft vibes along with saltwater yabbies and live shrimp makes up what most anglers are doing. But the rest of the lake is also fishing well with lots of undersize cod being landed on Jackalls and spinnerbaits up around the dam wall area fishing near the rocks.
Gold Coast fishing
Usual fishing at Gold Coast with better inshore fishing is up around the Pin near Crusoe and Kalinga banks with some larger than normal flathead being taken daily over the 75 cm mark, mainly using 4 inch soft plastics. Still plenty of bream and whiting around the deep channels and the odd jew or kingfish about.
Offshore still a real winter bite with smaller snapper and parrot fish around the 36 fathoms fishing hard on the bottom with the odd pearl perch reported while out wider a few dolphin fish are showing up being caught on trolled skirts or live yakkas.
Tip of the Week
Right now we have some of the best fishing at our back door, the cod fishing at Coolmunda is better than a Copeton trip while many of our close dams are having a crazy bite in the schools.A great chance to work out reading your fishfinder cause there will be plenty to look at also easy to find a place to start as most schools are holding 10 or more boats on them.
